Safety Education

The Aberdeen Family YMCA offers safety education courses. Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor Training, and provides participants the opportunity to learn life-saving skills and become certified for fun and rewarding jobs. YMCA aquatics staff even have the ability to work year-round! The Y also offers CPR/AED classes for adult, child and infant certifications as well as first aid.

Hold convenient safety classes at your organization! The YMCA will come to you! It’s great for childcare, construction, hotels, and so much more. After completion of the class, you will be certified for two years in CPR, AED, and First Aid for adult/child/infant.

The organization will need to provide:

Lifeguard Course

Ages 15 & Up

Blended learning offering of the Lifeguarding program combines online knowledge acquisition and in-person water, first aid and CPR/AED skills training. Building on the same knowledge and skills as our traditional in-person only training, the course trains lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water. Topics include water rescue skills, surveillance and recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED and more. The program reflects the latest CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Science and findings from the 2011 United States Lifeguard Standards Coalition Report. Plus, the online format enables participants to complete interactive lessons and activities on their own time. Instructor-led sessions reinforce learning and emphasize skill building.

Lifeguard Instructor Review

Ages 17 & Up

The Lifeguard Instructor review course will include an administrative review of Red Cross Programs, policies and systems followed by in-water skills session, instructors will practice skills on their peers. Instructors who wish to gain a basic level certification will also have the opportunity to “test out” at the end of this session to earn a basic-level Lifeguarding/ First Aid/ CPR/ AED certification. 

Prerequisites:

Participants must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Certification
Participant must have completed the 2017 Lifeguard Instructor online update and bring the certification to the beginning of class

Cost: $165
Important Registration Information: 

Registration is due at least 1 week prior to class start date for lifeguard review course.
No refunds for cancellations within 72 hours of course start date. $50.00 is non-refundable on all registrations.
$25.00 late fee is applied for registration after the due date.
$25.00 fee applies to transfer to different course within 72 hours of course start date.
Payment in full is due with registration.
Class sizes are limited. Register as soon as possible. Must have at least 2 participants to run the class
Attendance at all classes offered is mandatory.

Lifeguarding and First Aid Challenge Course (Re- Certification) : 

Ages 15 & Up

This course is for certified Lifeguards who need to renew their Lifeguarding and First Aid certifications. Participants must be currently certified or within about three months of expiration. Participants will take the written test for Lifeguarding and First Aid training, as well as perform all the skills learned in a Lifeguarding class. There will be limited review for this test so it is expected that participants have reviewed all information before attending this challenging course.

Water Safety Instructor Training

Ages 16 & Up

This course is designed to train swim lesson instructors. Participants must be 16 years of age by the last day of class, and be able to complete level 4 exit skills. Pre-test of level 4 skills will be done the first night of class. Participants need to bring a one piece suit or swim trunks and goggles. On the Monday before the weekend class, an email link will be sent to each participant for the pre-course work – so make sure to submit a correct email address!
