MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
JARROD TUSZKA

Jarrod Tuszka started training at the Y with his little brother Derrek in 2010. When he started training at the Y the motivation was to have a more intense organized written plan dedicated to his needs. His primary focus in 2010 was to improve athletic performance for football. His ultimate goal was to someday receive a scholarship to play college football. After years of training he did reach his goal this year. He actually exceeded his expectations and received a full ride scholarship to play football for North Dakota State University.
Rewind two months ago, Jarrod was participating in high school track and field. He just received the baton at the Region Track Meet for the 4X200 meter relay. He was running the anchor leg of the relay, when he blew out his left Achilles tendon 15 meters to go. “As soon as it happened, I thought my athletic career was over” stated Jarrod. Jarrod had the tendon surgically repaired May 17 and as of June 28 he is out of his leg boot and into a running shoe! He continued to train at the Y throughout the rehab process and his athletic career is still starring him straight in the eyes! He will be going to North Dakota State University to play football in another month, only he will have to wait one more year to fully participate with the football team. Jarrod received a medical red-shirt for this year, so his plans will be on hold one more year. Jarrod explained “it’s not a bad thing, I can use this year to continue to improve my strength and mental toughness.”
Jarrod says that the training program here at the Y taught him some valuable life lessons that helped him through the injury. We learned over the years that training at the Y made him more discipline in his life and forced him to focus on everything he does in life. “In the end it has made me stronger and a better person, I couldn’t quit on myself due to this injury. Ten years from now I can look back and say I didn’t quit and I came back from an injury most people wouldn’t.”
