CHANGE LIVES,
INCLUDING YOUR OWN
VOLUNTEERING AT THE Y
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. Be a part of a cause committed to moving people and communities forward.
Across the United States, more than 500,000 business leaders, community advocates, parents, teens and individuals who want to give back and support their neighbors volunteer at the Y. That’s because in 10,000 neighborhoods nationwide we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver positive, personal and social change.
With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, Y volunteers give men, women and children of all ages and from all walks of life the resources and support they need to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
DR. KARL KOSSE
Dr. Karl Kosse and his wife Betsy have been Y members for many years. They started by attending yoga, pool exercise and walking on the treadmill. About a year ago, Karl started attending cycling classes, because it has been proven that cycling is beneficial for Parkinson’s disease, which Karl was diagnosed with around 8 years ago. His Dr. told him cycling would help with his balance and the involuntary shakes, which it has. At the age of 83, Karl does a good job of keeping up with the other cyclists and puts on approximately 15 miles per class, and as Karl says “even if I don’t always follow what the instructors are telling me to do.”
Karl has many interesting stories and is always willing to share them. He was born in Lubben, Germany just 50 miles from Berlin. He played the violin and piano and was also a gymnast for 2 years (1942-1944) doing as Karl puts it “the usual very primitive exercises and I didn’t like track and field.” As a child Karl remembers there being a parade every year on April 20th for Hitler’s birthday, until the year 1945 when the Russians attacked his hometown. Later during the Russian occupation, five of Karl’s classmates were taken and put in a concentration camp, where they later perished. Karl moved to West Berlin at around 14 years old to avoid being taken; and his parents would visit him there as often as they could.
Dr. Karl Kosse went to Medical School in Germany, and then came over to Orange, New Jersey for a year internship (1956-1957). He returned to Germany and in January 1960, he came back to the University of Vermont for his Residency in Urology. That is where he met Betsy, who was originally from Haiti and they were married by December. They have five children; one son and four daughters, one whom they adopted from Haiti when she was three years old. Another one of their daughters has completed two Ironman Triathlons (in New York State and Austria). In January 1964, they came to Aberdeen, where Karl started at the Aberdeen Medical Center founded by Doctors Berbos, King and Cooley. He also worked there with Doctors Taylor, Janusz and Hovland. The Medical Center is where the Johnson Professional Building currently resides (on the opposite corner of the the Alexander Mitchell Library) Karl retired from his practice in 1996, but was the Medical Director at Worthmore until 2002. Karl speaks three languages, German, French and English and understands Russian. Karl was also a member of “AUCS”, Aberdeen University Community Symphony.
Even though there are days now that Karl says “he could just sleep all day”, he also says “you do what you have to do and the Y has helped him maintain pretty good health.”
WE ENJOY SHARING YOUR SUCCESS STORIES, IF YOU HAVE ONE TO CONTRIBUTE, PLEASE EMAIL ASHLEY! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK KARL!
KATHY ASKE
NAMED EMPLOYEE OF
THE QUARTER

Since the beginning of Kathy Aske’s employment at the Learning Tree in May 2007, we realized she is the piece that has been missing from our puzzle. When you are putting a puzzle together and you get all the outside pieces together and you get that feeling of “ah-ha” even if all the other pieces inside are still scattered all over the place, you still feel good because your edges are keeping all of the other crazy pieces together. That’s Kathy! She takes on all the duties no one else can or is willing to do and does it with a smile. She greets everyone that walks in with a big smile. It just makes you want to hug her! And she gives hugs freely!
Not only does Kathy model the core values but she believes in healthy living by working out daily at the Y. We would like to congratulate her on her achievements and thank her for everything she has done for the Y.
CONGRATULATIONS KATHY!
