HAVE FUN
THIS FOURTH
With the 4th of July upon us we wanted you to have some important safety tips:
Sparklers, which we all assume are a ‘safe’ alternative firework for children, burn up to 1,200 degrees. Little arms are too short to hold a sparkler at a safe distance. Give your young child a glow stick instead. Glow sticks can be just as fun and do not burn at a temperature hot enough to melt glass.
Do NOT wear loose clothing while using fireworks.
Never ever light a firework indoors or near dry grass, trees or bushes.
Fireworks should always be pointed far away from any homes. Be a good neighbor and make sure you have accounted for wind so that your fireworks do not go off directly over someone else’s rooftop!
Never stand over a firework that has been lit and not gone off. Many accidents occur while people are inspecting a ‘miss-fire’. Instead of checking to see why a firework has not gone off, immediately douse it with water from a bucket kept nearby. Better to be safe than to have a firework go off and land among spectators or on someone’s house.
Be prepared for accident or injury. Talk about possible scenarios…who should be the person in charge of the fireworks…who should be the person that ensures that children stay a safe distance away…who should be the person that is in charge of the bucket of water or the fire extinguisher?
We teach children that fire is not safe to play with but for some reason we forget that rule on the 4th of July. We recommend that fireworks be left to the professionals so that an accident doesn’t ruin your holiday fun!
MOVING OUR
EDUCATION FORWARD
In June, four of our YDC staff attended the prestigious NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) Institute in Minneapolis, MN. This is the first time any of our staff have attended such an important event. Shelley Wilkie (Lead Staff in the Professors Pre-K classroom), Amy Severson (Lead Staff in the Wizards Pre-K classroom), Sarah Woods (Lead Staff in the Storm Preschool classroom) and Kaitlin Gehring (Lead Staff in the Tumbleweeds Preschool classroom) all attended four jam packed days of learning about Literacy, STEM, Accreditation, Curriculum, Technology, Language and so much more! The knowledge these staff came back with will be a valuable tool as we go forward with our on-going endeavor to be the best!
