BE COOL AFTERSCHOOL

girl As summer is winding down, let’s not forget about what is happening in the YMCA. We look forward to accommodating gym schedules this fall with basketball practices, floor hockey, and open gym. Children ages 6 and above are welcome to use the YMCA during scheduled "youth hours" without an adult YMCA gyms are available between the hours of 4:00-9:00pm. The pool will be available Monday-Wednesday-Friday between the hours of 4:00-7:00pm. The Activity Center will be available between the hours of 4:00-6:00pm. Don’t forget to help inspire your children to get active with the availability of our Specialty Center between the hours of 4:00-6:00pm provided they are 9 years old and have completed an orientation. Please remember that these are not structured programs for children.

Interested in structured afterschool programming for your children? The Youth Development Center (YDC) now has openings and will transport your child from school to the YDC. After arriving at the YDC your children will be provided with a healthy snack and split into structured programming activities until 5:00pm where they then return to the building for pick up between 5:00-6:00pm. Whether they are into sports, music, dancing, cooking, science, ect. We have it all to fit their needs. Nowhere for your children to go on “No-School Days?” We accommodate and provided all day structured programming most days.

Help make after school hours for your children an experience to remember whether it is during our “Youth Hours” at the YMCA or our structured afterschool program at the YDC.

Tip

Perhaps the first and biggest benefit people get from volunteering is the satisfaction of providing service and making a difference in their community and country.  However, over the past two decades there has been growing research that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits.  This research has established a strong relationship between volunteering and health – those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life.

Research indicates that older volunteers are the most likely to receive greater benefits from volunteering, whether because they are more likely to face higher incidence of illness or because volunteering provides them with physical and social activity and a sense of purpose at a time most needed.  Some of these findings also indicate that volunteers who devote a “considerable” amount of time to volunteer activities (about 100 hours per year) are most likely to exhibit positive health outcomes.

If you're looking for a purpose, more social interaction, or health enhancement try volunteering.  At the Y we have several opportunities for you to be engaged.
